Ljubljana, 05 September (STA) - The jobless total in Slovenia continues to fall, as it edged down 1% to 83,843 in August over July. At the annual level, the figure dropped by 14.4%, the Employment Service said on Tuesday.
In August, 5,027 people registered as unemployed anew, 23.7% less than in July and 7.6% less than in August 2016.
Among the newly registered, 2,819 had their fixed-term contracts run out, 569 were first-time job seekers and 728 were made redundant.
Meanwhile, 5,858 were removed from the unemployment register in August, with 3,547 finding a job or becoming self-employed, which is 17.6% less than in June and 18.2% down year-on-year.
At the regional level, the jobless total was up in Novo mesto (+1.6%), Nova Gorica (+0.9%) and Sevnica (+0.3%). The biggest drops were recorded in Trbovlje (-2.3%) and Maribor (-2.2%), followed by Ptuj, Kranj and Murska Sobota (-1.7% each).
On a yearly comparison, the most significant drop in the number of unemployed was recorded in Trbovlje (-22.7%), followed by Novo mesto (-19.4%) and Velenje (-18.2%).
In the first eight months of the year, 91,540 people were registered as jobless on average. This is 13.7% down from the same period last year.
Some 51,800 people registered anew, which is 8.1% less than in the same period last year, more than half of them (30,227) because their fixed-term contracts had run out.
A total of 67,605 were taken out of the unemployment register, as 48,614 found a job, which is a 9.4% drop from the same period last year.« Back
