Ljubljana, 24 July (STA) - Public expenditure on formal education in Slovenia in 2011 exceeded EUR 2bn. This equals 6% of GDP, up from 5.7% of GDP in the year before, the Statistics Office said on Wednesday.
Primary education accounted for the bulk of the expenditure on formal education (45%), followed by tertiary education (22.3%), secondary education (19.4%) and preschool education (13.3%).
A total of 87% of the expenditure was covered by public funds, more than 11% by private funds and only 1.5% by international funds.
Current expenditure, which includes salaries and other current expenses, amounted to EUR 2.18bn, which equals 92% of the total expenditure on educational institutions, while investment expenditure represented more than 8% of the total.
