Ptuj offers wine tasting in pitch darkness

Ptuj, 13 August (STA) - Drawing on its rich wine-growing tradition, the city of Ptuj has come up with a peculiar curiosity for tourists - wine tasting in a pitch dark tunnel under Ptuj Castle which takes place against the backdrop of music.

The idea is to offer something brand new, at the same time bringing back to life the forgotten tunnels under the castle, Anja Potočnik from the Tura Ptuj association has told the STA.

The tunnel is dark and mysterious, reminiscent of the wine cellars under Ptuj's streets and houses which used to be home to important local wine growers and traders.

The temperature in the tunnel is around 15 degrees Celsius, so it is pleasantly cold in summer and warm in winter.

Wine tasting in darkness will keep taste buds busy enabling wine lovers not only to taste the wine but also to feel it.

Bringing a completely new experience, wine tasting in darkness will be perhaps the most interesting for those who engage in wine tasting more often, although it has been designed for all adult visitors, explained Potočnik.

She said Ptuj and its surroundings had been known for its excellent wines already in the past.

Now it is mostly known for white wines, offering a wide selection of different wines at various wineries, with company Ptujska Klet being the biggest and most successful wine producer.

Statistics Office figures show the number of visitors to Ptuj rose by over 2% to slightly more than 27,000 in the first six months, with over 60% coming from abroad.

By 2021, Ptuj, the origins of which can be traced back to the Ancient Roman town Poetovio, aims to become a high-profile green destination in Central Europe.

Part of its tourist strategy are genuine experiences of its rich cultural heritage and natural heritage, including through wine-growing traditions and local food.
