Ormož, 09 July (STA) - The German motorhome maker Carthago, which has a large production location in Odranci in eastern Slovenia, plans to expand to nearby Ormož in the coming years, a move welcomed by the local community that comes after the closure of a major eyewear factory there.
Under an agreement signed on Friday with the local community, Carthago plans to buy a 100,000 m2 plot of land in the Ormož industrial zone.
Production is set to start in early 2023 and the company plans to employ 300-400 workers there initially, rising to up to 600 in the second phase, said Sandra Županec, the director of Carthago's Slovenian subsidiary.
The first phase of the investment alone is worth EUR 25 million.
"Of course we expect some sort of aid from the state if the conditions are fulfilled and we can submit an application," she said.
Economy Minister Zdravko Počivalšek said he was glad Carthago opted for the investment, which he sees as proof that Slovenia's business environment is "positive and competitive".
He said the project would receive backing worth up to 25% of the investment.
