27.12.2007 Habakuk Golf Course Maribor

The Habakuk golf course with 18 holes and accompanying infrastructure will be constructed in the surroundings of Maribor. It will be constructed on a piece of land measuring 800 – 100 hectares in the immediate vicinity of Hotel Habakuk, the core of which is represented by the former shooting range.

Arguments in favour of the construction of a golf course:

The winter tourist season, despite the use of state-of-the-art methods, is limited to a relatively short period. Constructions of a golf course will create the possibility of extending the season throughout the rest of year.

The hotel capacity in the city of Maribor and its surroundings, especially in Hotel Habakuk, are looking for their own development possibilities in congress activities, for which a golf course could also be an important part of the tourist infrastructure.

Previous experience in the field of “golf tourism” in Slovenia is very positive and forecasts advantageous development possibilities in the future. The conditions for developing such tourism are an airport infrastructure, a satisfactory level of hotel services, and according to feasibility, more golf courses linked in one way or another to each other.

In the Podravje region in the year 2003 there were more than 600 registered golfers; the annual growth of members, being almost 10% means that the existing capacity of golf courses will no longer satisfy demand in peak periods.

The stated arguments are almost ideal for deciding to construct o golf course, as the need for its construction is shown on the side of tourist economics in its realisation of development orientations, and additionally there are also the sporting-recreational needs of the inhabitants of the city its surroundings.

Construction of accompanying infrastructure

Buildings and infrastructure must meet the need of 150 visitors per day. The cloakrooms and lavatories must also be adapted to this criterion, but regarding parking places and the restaurant, the capacity will be combined with the nearby Hotel Habakuk. On the edge of the golf course a small number of villas or an apartment complex, respectively, is set up, which can be used also during the winter season.

Following preliminary analysis, the foreseen location in the vicinity of Hotel Habakuk completely fulfils the requirements needed for the construction of a golf course with 18 holes and accompanying infrastructure.
