According to a study that was carried out in 2006 by Transparency International, a non-governmental organisation that studies corruption statistics, Slovenia has less corruption than the most of the new EU-10 members and is 28th in the list of least corrupt countries in the world. The list is headed by Iceland and Finland. Austria is 11th on the list, Germany 16th, and the United States is 20th. Slovenia has a higher rating than Italy (45th) or Greece (54th).

According to the IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook, which defines the environment for bribery and corruption according to six survey indicators, listed under “Government Efficiency” and “Business Efficiency”, Slovenia is gradually improving. The extent of the black economy and corruption in the public sphere are the greatest hindrances to Slovenia’s progress in this area. According to IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook 2005, Slovenia ranks 52nd among 60st the most competitive countries.

Like all transition countries in the region, Slovenia was constantly monitored as part of the process of attaining full membership of international organisations such as the EU, NATO and the OECD.
