Location and transport
The Posavska Region borders on Croatia. Thanks to the immediate vicinity of Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, with the population of 1.5 million on the one hand, and relatively good transport links (road and railway leading to Ljubljana - Zagreb), the region has a lot of potential after Slovenia’s accession to the EU when the road border crossing Obrezje and the railway border crossing Dobova will have a leading role in movement of goods and persons across the Schengen border.
Population
In terms of the number of inhabitants (70,000) it is one of the smallest Slovenian regions.

The regional centre is Krško (28,100) with a secondary school centre. The students living in the region enrol either in the University of Ljubljana or the University of Zagreb (Croatia).

In Krško there is a nuclear power plant and more electrical energy will be generated in the region once hydroelectric power plants are built on the Sava River. Currently, the region is riddled by high unemployment, particularly as the result of problems faced by the textile and wood-processing industries.
The region has become home to a number of foreign investors who were able to tap into the pool of skilled workforce and easily get industrial land for development or re-development.
