Slovenia's joblessness at 10.8% in December

Ljubljana, 16 February (STA) - Slovenia's registered unemployment rate in December stood at 10.8%, up 0.4 percentage points from the month before, but down 1.5 points year-on-year, show fresh data from the Statistics Office.

The male unemployment rate rose by 0.7% percentage points from November to 10%, while female joblessness dropped by 0.1 points to 11.7% in December 2016.

The monthly increase in unemployment comes as the number of people in employment decreased by 0.8% to 824,500; the biggest fall was in construction, where employment contracted by 6.6%.

The jobless total as a rule increases in December due the inflow of those whose fixed-term contracts expire at the end of the year.

Compared to December 2015, the total of people in employment rose by 2.6% while the number of self-employed decreased by 2.3% to 87,100.

In December 2016 almost 2,700 people were employed or self-employed for the first time in Slovenia, 29.9% of them foreigners.

Of those who got their first employment, 5.2% were self-employed. Of the rest, 85.6% had their first employment contract for a fixed period and 14.4% for an unspecified period.
